Letting the one percent win!

Rachel calls Howard a genius: Even we get surprised at times! That’s how it was when we watched the start of last evening’s Maddow Show.

In her rambling, trademarked fashion, “Rach” devoted the first sixteen minutes to the Herman Cain sex chase. Incredibly, though, the first six minutes were focused on somebody else:
MADDOW (11/7/11): Thanks to you at home as well for staying with us for the next hour.

There is so much going on.

The long running gross-out genius performance arts satire radio spectacle that is The Howard Stern Show, which is now just on satellite radio, they’re apparently promoting a singer. I don’t know if it’s like somebody who Howard Stern enjoys or if this is a paid arrangement or something.

But today, Republican presidential politics in America were briefly taken over by this...
Even we were shocked to see Maddow praise the Stern show for its “genius.” But then, Frank Rich always spoke well of his pal Don Imus’ brilliance.

These people live inside a bubble. You’re probably on the outside.

Long story short: As they always do, the Stern people seized control of yesterday’s sex chase presser—the press conference in which Sharon Bialek described the way she says she was assaulted by Cain. Because uh-oh! Before Bialek and her attorney, Gloria Allred, could get to the microphones they had paid for, the Howard Stern guy took control of the mikes and began dropping f-bombs around.

As they do every time.

To Maddow, this was a sign of the Stern program's genius. She played video segments of this low-IQ nonsense, burning up the first six minutes of her own low-IQ show.

Even we were surprised, although we recalled Maddow’s insistence to David Frum that she doesn’t want “a more grown-up politics” (see THE DAILY HOWLER, 4/1/09). Last week, Maddow slobbered all over herself with her first “fan appreciation night.” But last night was a surprise.

We recommend watching the full sixteen minutes (click here). It ends with Maddow showing how foolish she can be in her contempt for conservative voters. Those voters are stupid—but Stern is a genius!

So it goes inside the preserves which keep letting the one percent win.

The shape of the Stern program’s genius: Just so you can appreciate the general shape of the Stern program’s genius, this is the first bit of tape Maddow played last night. We continue directly from the excerpt we posted above:
GENIUS FROM THE STERN SHOW (videotape): This is not what you think it is. Just calm down. No, it's not what you think it is. Just calm down.

This is about Alisa Jordana. This is not about me. This is about Alisa Jordana. J-O-R-D-A-N-A, Alisa Jordana.

The name of one of her songs is “Fuck you, I’m fine.” And also, "Young Love" is a really good song to listen to, "Young Love."

REPORTER: Benjy, those are live mikes. Come on, seriously. Seriously. Could you move?

GENIUS FROM THE STERN SHOW: The name of the song is "Young—I won’t say the bad word. It’s “F you, I'm fine, F you, I'm fine.”

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MADDOW: He’s right. That’s in fact the name of the song in question.

(PLAYS CUT OF SONG)

MADDOW: So it’s true. We fact-checked it.
Rachel doesn’t fact-check much. Presumably, this was the latest gift to her fans, who enable this nonsense.

  1. I think I've lost any respect I might have had for Maddow. Whatever one thinks of Howard Stern, his crew's antics don't belong on a serious cable news show. Talk about circling the bowel...

  2. How many people actually watch the Maddow? Can't be very many so, on a relative basis, she's near harmless.
She must think Sally Field's riposte is a target for life.

  3. She's in competition with Hannity, which should tell you all you need to know.

  4. Tom, I'm not sure I can think of 3 liberals with greater exposure. I think that makes her significant, on a relative basis.

  5. um, Bob? She said "gross-out genius." If she'd called him a "scam artist," would you be complaining that she'd compared him to Rembrandt?

  6. Bob, who cares what Maddow thinks about the Howard Stern Show? This is, literally, the thing I care least about on the face of the earth. I don't watch her show. I don't listen to his show. I don't care that a member of his staff appropriated the microphone before a press conference. This is breathtakingly unimportant.

  7. Has the Rachel Maddow honeymoon on the left finally ended?

  8. Rachel was interesting on the radio (Air America). She's been co-opted on MSNBC. (Like most co-opting, it's probably happened without her being aware.)

I leave a space in the world for the Howard Stern's. A potentially constructive/imaginative/something good may come of it space. But whatever happened to the notion of propriety, that there are different arenas of discourse?

Those arenas can intermingle and, over time, shift. Well and good, truly. But instead of productively advancing such intermingling and shifting, Rachel long ago lost her way.

  9. Co-opted? Bullshit. She just wants to be luuuvvved. I could endure about 1:40 of her look-at-me, aren't-I-cute mugging and hamming. America is going down by the bow and this ignorant child is the 9:00 pm voice of the liberal/left?

Christ on a cracker, while we're making sure there is "space in the world" for Stern (don't worry, "something good" has come out of that "space", to the tune of 400 million: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/analyst-howard-stern-sirius-xm-58336) Hannity drew almost 3 times the viewership...

  10. Anonymous said, you are excitable! Can you handle a little generosity? Ever heard of ceding a point to win an argument?
